In medieval Europe, the dead didn't always stay buried. Bodies were moved, venerated as relics, and sometimes feared as revenants that might rise again and threaten the living.
For this spooky-season edition of the Archaeological Society of Alberta's free speaker series, Dr. Sandra Garvie-Lok looks at the "second life" of medieval bodies. She draws on the anthropology of death and on skeletal studies of so-called revenant burials.
At the heart of the talk is one question: was there something about these people's lives that made their communities fear they would walk again?
The lecture is free and open to all ages, and takes place at the Strathcona County Museum & Archives in Sherwood Park.
