Reserve Your Free Spot at Edmonton's Perseid Meteor Watch Party
Shooting stars, zero light pollution, and it won't cost you a cent. Every August the Perseids throw the best sky show of the year — and this summer you can catch them from a dark field full of telescopes, campfires, and fellow stargazers, all for free.
Here's the deal: Touch Grass Club is hosting a free Perseid Meteor Shower Watch Party at Miquelon Lake on August 15–16, and it's the easy, do-it-with-friends version of chasing shooting stars. No squinting at your backyard through the neighbour's porch light. Just seven hours under some of the darkest skies in the region.
Seven hours under the stars
From 7 PM to 2 AM, the night runs long and the sky does the heavy lifting. You'll get guided dusk nature walks before the dark sets in, bannock on a stick over the campfire, and sky-and-forest stories from Knowledge Keepers. Once night falls, telescopes point at deep space, there's hands-on crafts, and you can make long-exposure light paintings to take home. Part star party, part conservation night, part campfire hang.
The Perseids come courtesy of Comet 109P/Swift–Tuttle — a visitor that only swings past every 133 years. On a dark night near the peak, you can see 50 to 75 meteors an hour. And 2026's a good one: a new moon around the peak means the sky stays properly black.
The one small catch
It's out at Miquelon Lake, well past the city glow — which is exactly why the sky's so good. No car? Grab the shuttle: about $10, with pickups at Northgate, Stadium Station, Mill Woods, Southgate, and West Edmonton Mall, rolling back from the lake at 1 AM. Book that seat separately when you reserve. Or, hop in the car and carpool out for an unforgettable night under the dark sky preserve
