August in Edmonton is packed — and you don't need a big budget to get in on it. Everything on this list is $25 or under, and plenty of it is flat-out free. Drive-in movies, food trucks, festivals, a Stanley Cup, and a farm full of alpacas — all for the price of lunch or less.

Summer Block Party on Rice Howard Way | August 1 | Free
Watch five artists brawl with brushes. This Saturday, Rice Howard Way turns into an open-air studio: Art Battle Royale pits five painters against the clock with live music, audience voting, and one wildcard twist from the gloriously named Box of Foolishness — no art degree required, just a favourite. Then fold your own inkblot and watch a butterfly, a monster, or a mystery blob appear. 3–7 PM, free to attend. Come for the art, stay for the block.

Free Pancake Breakfast | August 13 | Free
Free pancakes and a free shoulder massage, in a parking lot, on a Thursday morning. MaKami's massage therapy students work the chairs while the kids' zone runs face painting, games and a balloon artist. Fruit cups and refreshments too. Nothing to buy, nothing to spend. Rolls 9 AM to noon.

Par-TEE at Victoria Golf Club | August 14
Bring your clubs — leave your wallet at home. Edmonton AMPLIFIED kicks off the CPKC Women's Open with a free night of swings and sound at the Victoria driving range. Free range access, free balls (BYO clubs), plus a pop-up BBQ and bar from The Greenhouse at Victoria. Three acts back to back: Mox Jet at 6, Panic Pixie at 7, Sister Suzie at 8. All ages, free parking, doors at 5:30. Range access is first come, first served — grab a free ticket before the walk-up spots run out.

Catch a Meteor Shower Watch Party at Touch Grass Club | August 15
Dark sky, zero light pollution, seven hours under the Perseids. Guided nature walks at dusk, then bannock on a stick around the fire while knowledge keepers share the stories of the sky. Telescopes pointed at deep space, long-exposure light painting to take home. Shuttles run from five points across Edmonton — book that seat separately.

Tree Planting in Silverberry | August 15 | Free
Put a fruit tree in the ground and it outlives you. The City's Root for Trees crew is planting native fruiting trees and shrubs in Silverberry — you dig, you learn how the urban forest works, you go home with a free wildflower plant and Kind ice cream. Closed-toe shoes required.

FREE Drive in Movie Night: Mrs. Doubtfire | August 21
Sarasota Homes + Realty invites the community to one of its most anticipated events of the year—an evening of shopping, food, entertainment, and family fun. The celebration begins with a vibrant Night Market from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, featuring a curated selection of local makers, artisans, and small businesses. At 7:30 PM, guests can settle in under the stars for a family-friendly outdoor screening of Mrs. Doubtfire.

Trivia Night at Frank’s |
All that useless knowledge you've been hoarding? Wednesday is payday. Adventure for Wilderness | August 28 | Free
There are bats over your neighbourhood right now. You've just never heard them. Cory Olson of the Alberta Bat Program hands you a bat detector, talks you through echolocation, then walks the group into position before dusk — bats emerge thirty minutes after sunset, and you'll be out listening for at least an hour. Registration is by donation. One catch: rain, snow or heavy wind cancels it, because bats don't fly in bad weather either.

Chinatown After Dark invites you to experience the vibrant energy of Chinatown as the sun sets. Wander through glowing lantern-lit streets, discover hidden eateries, browse bustling night markets, and immerse yourself in the neighborhood's rich culture, flavors, and nightlife.

Soul Garden Party Party | August 2 | Free
Nine hours of patio, rain or shine. Red Star's Jasper Ave spot (10534 Jasper Ave) hosts Gunk x Denise, Junior Brown and Mr. Kou from 4pm to 1am, kitchen firing till 10. Sun, soul, and a lineup built to keep you planted. Long haul, worth every minute.

Downtown Nightlight Walking Tour | August 5 |
The buildings are still standing. The bars aren't. Ninety minutes on foot through downtown with the Edmonton Queer History Project, tracing the gay discos, lesbian bars, and less-respectable rooms that made the city's queer nightlife — the famous ones and the ones nobody put on a postcard. Starts at Michael Phair Park, which is its own bit of history.

Fish & Chip Fridays at Sabor | Fridays
Edmonton's most-anticipated fish fry is back. Every Friday in August, Sabor turns out golden, crispy fish and chips to go — and $15 gets you the plate plus a drink. Proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House and Santas Anonymous, so lunch does double duty. Starts 11am, runs until they sell out. Come early. Come hungry.

Midsummer Underwear Party | August 7 |
Pants are optional. That's the premise, and Evolution is committing three floors to it. Pengwen and AK on the decks, pantscheck at the door so you're not carrying your jeans around all night, and $10 doubles for anyone taking part. Advance from $8, climbing to $20 at the door. Buy early, save twelve bucks.

Pride POP UP Screening | August 8 | $10
Five queer shorts, one upstairs room, zero pretension. Doors at 6 for a mixer with local queer artists showing work — free food and a drink ticket come with admission, bar open for the rest. At 8, lights down for films from Edmonton and beyond. Small space, big night. Grab a seat before it's gone.

Catch a Show at Edmonton Fringe |
Eleven days, 209 shows, nothing over $20. North America's oldest and largest Fringe is unjuried and uncensored — shows are picked by lottery, artists set their own prices, and performers keep every dollar they earn. That's 1,300+ performances of drama, musical theatre, improv, comedy, and things that resist categorization entirely, packed into eleven days in Old Strathcona.
