Spooky season is officially on. This week you can walk through three haunted houses at Deadmonton, watch Scream in a 1920s-style movie house and vote on a beer vs. wine dinner. The Edmonton International Film Festival wraps its 40th year, the Canadian Finals Rodeo opens with free pancakes, and an orchestra plays How to Train Your Dragon 2 live to the film.
10 Things to do in Edmonton this Week - Your Guide to Weekday Fun in Edmonton
Learn Something New Over a Brew at Curious Brews
Curious Brews brings a speaker into MKT Beer Market on October 6. This month it's accessibility researcher Brooke Leifso, talking about what makes an event welcoming and accessible: physical access, and also the smaller decisions organizers often overlook.
It's a useful talk for anyone who plans events, runs a venue or sits on a community board. Order a drink, listen, and stay for the Q&A. If you can't get to MKT, you can join over Zoom.
Walk Through One of Deadmonton’s Three Haunts
Three houses wait inside: Cursed, The Asylum and The Rejects. One ticket covers all three. Between rounds, the outdoor compound has roaming actors, food and themed cocktails to top off this horrifying, must-do Edmonton haunted house.
Catch the Back Half of Stony Plain Road Dining Week | Until October 10
Every food and drink spot in the Stony Plain Road Business Association area is on this year's Dining Week map. That covers one of Edmonton's most varied restaurant strips, so you can plan anything from a quick coffee to a full dinner.
Some restaurants are featuring a special dish or combo for the week. Others are inviting you in for their regular menu. You have until October 10 to work through the map.
Spooky Tuesdays Return to the Capitol Theatre
Fort Edmonton Park's Capitol Theatre spends every Tuesday in October showing a horror classic. The series opens on October 6 with Scream. Friday the 13th, Rosemary's Baby and Carrie follow on the next three Tuesdays.
Seating is first come, first served. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the film starts at 7:30 pm. Park in Lot G behind the theatre.
Beer vs. Wine Dinner at Nowhere Wine Bar
Nowhere Wine Bar is setting up a showdown on Tuesday Night. Crush Imports brings the wine, Odd Company Brewing brings the beer, and Chef Theo cooks four courses for them to pair with. Every course comes with one of each. You taste both and vote for the better match, and the votes decide which side wins the night.
Line Dance at Cook County's Cowgirl Social Club
Thursday nights at Cook County Saloon belong to the Cowgirl Social Club. A free line dancing lesson starts at 8:30, there are cowgirl prizes every hour, and drink specials run all night.
If you want dinner first, Cook County Steakhouse next door serves hand-cut Alberta beef and cocktails. You can eat there, then head over to the dance floor.
Free Pancake Breakfast to Kick Off CFR Week
The Canadian Finals Rodeo is back in town, and the week opens with a free pancake breakfast at Ice District Fan Park on October 8 from 8 to 10 am. Anyone can come, so stop for a plate on your way to work.
Catch the Last Few Days of Edmonton International Film Festival
The 40th Edmonton International Film Festival has three days left. Screenings continue through Saturday at Landmark Cinemas 9 in City Centre and Metro Cinema at the Garneau, with a mix of international festival picks, Canadian features and work from Alberta filmmakers.
The festival closes the way it opened, with a local story. The closing gala is Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story, a documentary from Edmonton's Score G Productions about the comedian and the $12 million his half-brother embezzled from him.
If you missed the sold-out opening gala, Smudge the Blades gets an encore screening on October 3. Cody Lightning's film won the Best Canadian Discovery prize at TIFF this year.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 in Concert
Watching a film while a full symphony orchestra plays the score live in the room is a different experience from watching it at home. John Powell's soundtrack for How to Train Your Dragon 2, with its big brass themes and Celtic strings, suits it especially well.
The film plays in HD with the orchestra performing in sync at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. There are two shows: Friday, October 9 at 7:30 pm and a Saturday matinee on October 10 at 2 pm. The matinee works well for families.
Candlelight Tribute to Fleetwood Mac
On October 9, a string quartet plays Fleetwood Mac by candlelight at MacEwan University's Triffo Theatre. Expect "Dreams," "Go Your Own Way," "Landslide" and "The Chain," arranged for strings.
The show runs about an hour. Doors open 45 minutes early, and late arrivals aren't let in. It's open to ages 8 and up.
